What if you let threads and pink surround you?

Dear Reader,

As promised, I am sending you news about my installation Au fil des connexions / Over Connections at the Cambridge Art Galleries.

If you missed my last message, I created my largest textile installation for an exhibition entitled Parallèles : Forces féminines éclipsées (Paralèlles: Unseen Feminine Forces), which opened earlier this month. Curated by Alix Voz, it includes works by “three artists who have distinct practices but highlight the feminine forces that are often invisible, yet very present in the world around us.” With textiles as the common thread and witness to stories that often go unnoticed, the exhibition highlights the essential contribution of women as guardians of culture and agents of technological developments that have revolutionized our societies. From the works on display to the exhibition design and choice of colours, everything converges to create a presence that is both gentle and powerful.

The installation is presented against a pink background, which I have become fond of (known as Baker-Miller Pink). This shade was introduced in prisons in 1979 to calm and control inmates. This pink has become associated with mechanisms of suppression and institutional control. Now introduced and re-appropriated in the gallery space by the curator, it symbolizes both the ongoing oppression and desire to constantly control women, but also the silent yet persistent feminine power. I literally felt the calming effects of this shade during the installation at the gallery!

This installation calls on us to feel, to regain awareness of our bodies, to let ourselves be surrounded by the threads, to navigate through the mesh, to enter a new space, and to move in ways that are unfamiliar to us. Last but not least, it invites you to have fun! Children are the best at enjoying this work, but it is for all ages!

If you don't have the chance to visit the gallery, I invite you to leave your screen NOW and, if possible, stand up, feel the air around your skin, stretch your arms, and touch the materials around you. Then, if you feel like it, reply to this email to share your experience with me and tell me what marvels you in your daily life.

You deserve to be filled with wonder because you are alive! A little wonder every day creates a life full of meaning.

Until next time!

carolina

Dear Reader, I am so excited to present the biggest immersive textile art installation I have made so far! It is the second version of Over Connections. Made with yarn and triple the scale than the previous one, it is meant to give a tangible and embodied experience of interconnectivity both as an extension of our physical abilities and as a constriction of our physical life. More than a visual piece of art, this installation is made for visitors to touch, feel and wear, their presence being...

Dear Reader, Something I have been working on for over six months and haven't shared at all - there is only so much one can do - is the building of a new version of Over Connections, a fully immersive multi-sensorial knitted sculptural installation. This is going to be the largest installation I have brought to life so far! I am so excited to bring this piece to life and have people interact with it. I want to acknowledge that this would not have been possible without Zia Foley who diligently...

Dear Reader, When I first revealed my work on constellations, a colleague shared with me how it resonated with the book she was reading, Orbital by Samantha Harvey. Naturally, my curiosity led me to dive into this novel about the daily life of astronauts on the International Space Station orbiting Earth. Immersed in this universe that propelled me into space and gave me a vertiginous view of our existence and our planet, I realized how important it is to change our perspective. To celebrate...
